Identifying the Source of the Leak

  1. Inspect the Attic: Look for signs of water damage, such as stains, mold, or wet insulation.
  2. Check the Roof Surface: Examine shingles, flashing, and vents for visible damage or gaps.
  3. Inspect Roof Valleys: These are common areas for leaks due to the higher volume of water flow.

Tools and Materials Needed

  • Ladder
  • Safety harness
  • Roofing nails or screws
  • Roofing tar or sealant
  • Replacement shingles or roofing material
  • Hammer or nail gun
  • Pry bar
  • Utility knife
  • Caulking gun

Step-by-Step Guide to Fixing a Roof Leak

Step 1: Ensure Safety First

  • Use a sturdy ladder and a safety harness.
  • Avoid working on the roof during wet, snowy, or windy conditions.

Step 2: Remove Damaged Shingles

  • The shingle is nailed on with 2 rows of nails.
  • The first row is in the middle of the shingle. Using a flat bar pry bar, reach under and pry the nails out.
  • The second row will be in the middle of the shingle above. Be very careful as it is easy to damage the good shingles.

Step 3: Install Replacement Shingles

  • Cut new shingles to fit the area, if necessary.
  • Put the new shingle in place. If multiple rows were removed, start with the lowest one and work your way up.
  • Ensure the new shingles overlap the existing ones and are lined up with the adjacent ones on the same row to prevent future leaks.
  • Nail it in the middle with 5 nails evenly spread out for a full shingle.
  • Then on the row above, reinstall the nail in the middle of the shingle so the new shingle is nailed in the middle and top once completed.

Step 4: Use Tar

  • Use tar between each shingle to help them stick to each other.
  • It’s also good to gently try to pull up surrounding shingles; if you can lift them, use tar to glue them together to prevent wind damage later.

Step 5: Seal Exposed Nails or Screws

  • Apply roofing tar or sealant over any exposed nails or screws to prevent water infiltration.

Step 6: Inspect and Test

  • Once the repair is complete, inspect the area to ensure it’s secure.
  • Test the repair by spraying water on the roof and checking for leaks inside the attic.

Preventative Measures to Avoid Future Leaks

  • Regular roof inspections and maintenance. At the minimum, inspect from the ground after a windstorm.
  • Clean gutters and downspouts to ensure proper water drainage.
  • Trim overhanging tree branches to prevent damage from falling limbs.
